Clean Monday marks the beginning of Lent and is a special day for Greece – and especially for Crete. It comes right after Carnival Sunday, launching the fasting period that lasts until Holy Saturday. In Crete, the day is celebrated with the beloved tradition of Koulouma – outdoor feasts in nature with Lenten delicacies, kites, music and dancing.
From the cities to the most picturesque villages, the whole island dresses up in colours of tradition and spirituality. The air fills with the scent of fresh greens, taramasalata, halva, lagana bread and classic bean soup, while the sky above is dotted with kites of every colour and shape.
🎭 On the DiscoverCrete blog, you’ll find events happening all over the island – from festive gatherings in town squares to family-friendly activities out in the open.
