The site where works are currently underway to restore and highlight a traditional complex featuring a historic watermill, flour mill, olive press, and “rassofabrika” (textile dye workshop) in the village of old Mixorrouma was recently visited by Mayor Giannis Tatarakis.

“This is a landmark project with an initial budget of €470,000, funded by the Region of Crete, and it will transform not just the community of Mixorrouma, but the wider area as well.
Works are progressing at a rapid pace, and the imagery speaks for itself—it’s impressive. This is a historic building, a reference point for the village, full of memories for its residents,” the Mayor stated during his visit.

He added:
“This multi-layered heritage now lies at the heart of a project that aims not only at preserving, but at bringing history to life for the public. The museum being developed is not just an infrastructure project. It’s a model for combining historical preservation with innovative cultural management.

Visitors will be able to stroll through the lush and picturesque old Mixorrouma, visit the museum, and admire both the architecture and the original equipment, which has been preserved.
This is the kind of development we aim for—an investment in memory, education, and lived experience. We’re building the future of the next generations on the strength of our past. That is true sustainable growth.

Mayor Tatarakis also thanked the Region of Crete for funding, President Markos Katakis and the Board of the Mixorrouma Cultural Association, Vice Mayors Vaggelio Glampedaki and Angeliki Logiaki, Community President Giorgos Pelekanakis, and the contracting company BCS for their collaboration and commitment to the project timeline.
