Walk the Kato Asites – Archanes Route!
ABOUT
For an easy yet rewarding hike, suitable for kids over 10, the route from Kato Asites to Archanes covers a distance of 22 km along the famous E4 European trail.
The journey starts with an uphill trail that brings you near the stunning Agios Antonios Gorge. Descending the gorge on a dirt road, you soon pass by the peaceful chapel of Panagia Faneromeni.
Next, you reach the almost deserted village of Siva before continuing on the road to Dafnes. After crossing a small bridge, the provincial road connects Heraklion with the fertile Messara plain.
As you hike through the endless vineyards and olive groves, you’ll come to the picturesque village of Profitis Ilias. From here, the trail winds northeast and descends through vineyards, with Mount Juktas standing prominently in the distance. You’ll pass to the right of the mountain, near a firing range.
Finally, after a short stretch of paved road, the charming village of Archanes comes into view—your destination, where the vineyards and traditions of Cretan winemaking await you.
