Makasi Gallery
ABOUT
The military gate of the Martinengo Bastion is known as the Martinengo Gate or Makasi Gallery – the name comes from the Turkish word for "gatekeeper."
Although it was built for military use, the Martinengo Gate features a monumental façade on the city-facing side, crafted with a care that one would expect from a major civic entrance.
In more recent times, Makasi Gallery has become linked to one of the darkest chapters in both local and global history. During World War II, it was used to detain prisoners before they were sent to concentration camps. This grim history has turned the gallery into a site of remembrance.
In its first section, the part that opens onto the city, memorial columns list the names of those held prisoner there.

The tip of Local!
The second section, which leads to the eastern "lower square" of the Martinengo Bastion, is being prepared to host an exhibition dedicated to the Greek Resistance.
