Smiles: An Abandoned Village with a Gorge and a Stone Bridge
ABOUT
Smiles is located just 1 km east of the village of Vryses.
In August 1944, it was razed by the Nazis, a tragedy that led to its gradual decline and eventual abandonment.
Today, the houses lie in ruins, but there are still sights worth seeing. Of particular interest are the late Byzantine church of Panagia, which still preserves 14th-century frescoes, the church of Christ the Saviour, and the village’s old fountain, most likely built during Ottoman times.
A short distance from the village, don’t miss the Smiliano Gorge, carved by the Kalamavkas (or Smilianos) River—a spot of real natural beauty. Also nearby is the Smiliano Bridge, a charming old stone arch bridge built over the river.
