Sgourokefali: A Charming Haven with Heartwarming Residents
ABOUT
Legend has it that a shepherd named Sgouros bestowed his name upon the village he painstakingly constructed atop a hill. Given that, in Crete, a hill can also be referred to as ‘Kefali’, the village became known as Sgourokefali.
The charming paved square, adorned with cobblestones, serves as a focal point for both locals and visitors.
Traditional cafés line the opposite side of the street, inviting people to enjoy a cup of coffee or a sip of raki.
The village boasts a two-aisled church dedicated to the Holy Trinity and the Annunciation. Every year on 9th June, the village commemorates its patron saint, culminating in a festive celebration in the square.
Adjacent to Sgourokefali is the Karteros Gorge, adding to the natural beauty of the surroundings.
