Agia Anastasia, Kainourgio Chorio Pediados

Churches

ABOUT

A beautiful cave-chapel with no known dating, carved straight into the rock.

Inside, there is a steep incline caused by the natural slope of the rock, which led to the construction of a small staircase dividing the chapel into two levels. A modern concrete iconostasis decorates the space, featuring icons of the Virgin Mary holding Christ, Christ Pantocrator, and Agia Anastasia Farmakolytria.

Even though the chapel is carved into the rock, a carved niche can be seen in the sanctuary area.

During the German Occupation, the chapel served as a shelter for locals. According to tradition, the icon of the Saint was discovered here by a shepherd, which led to the decision to convert the rock into a chapel.

In earlier times, local women came here to wash clothes, using the four wells that once existed in the area.

A bell tower was added to the rock in 1960. The courtyard outside is carefully landscaped and surrounded by cypress, pine trees, olive trees, and rose bushes.
