Cities & Villages

ABOUT

Profitis Elias is a town within the Heraklion Municipality.

It is located at the north-western foothills of Rokka hill, about 18 kilometres from the city of Heraklion.

Visitors have a multitude of options when it comes to dining and accommodation. Naturally, the local cafés are known for their warm hospitality, where raki flows abundantly. The town produces raisins, oil and wine.

The town draws its water from the Megali Fountana spring. Within the town, one can find notable churches such as the Churches of Prophet Elias, Evangelismos (a two-aisled church), and Michael Archangel. Additionally, there are numerous chapels, some of which trace their origins back to Byzantine times. Prior to 1955, the town was known as Kanli Castelli.

The prosperity of the town is closely linked to the historical significance of Prophet Elias.
