Panagia in Kyrianna

Churches

ABOUT

At the heart of the village of Kyrianna stands the two-aisled church dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and Agia Paraskevi.

The construction of the church commenced in the 11th century in the form of a Greek cross with a dome, occupying the position of the present north aisle. During the early years of Venetian rule, the church was expanded westward, featuring extension doors adorned with pointed arches.

It is probable that the dome collapsed in the early 17th century, prompting its reconstruction. During this process, the original apses of the church were transformed into niches. Subsequently, the aisle of Agia Paraskevi was likely added. A bit later, the western façade was constructed in the Mannerist style.

The façade was built with uniform masonry and features decorative elements on the doorway and the bell tower. In close proximity to the church, there is an ecclesiastical museum.
