Kouses: Echoes of the Secret School
ABOUT
Kouses is situated at an elevation of 130 metres, nestled at the northern base of the 228-metre-high Pyrgos hill in the Asterousia range. This vantage point offers a sweeping panoramic view of the Kato Messara plain.
Agriculture stands as the primary occupation of the villagers.
It commemorates its festivities on 25th July, in honour of the Dormition of St Anna. The village holds historical significance, particularly with respect to the Turkish occupation, when it was a domain of the Kourmoulis family—a lineage of crypto-Christians.
In accordance with tradition, Kouses maintained a Secret School, where a Mr Spagos served as the teacher. The name of the District of Spagouliana was derived from the teacher’s name.
