Kouses: Echoes of the Secret School

Kouses is situated at an elevation of 130 metres, nestled at the northern base of the 228-metre-high Pyrgos hill in the Asterousia range. This vantage point offers a sweeping panoramic view of the Kato Messara plain.

Agriculture stands as the primary occupation of the villagers.

It commemorates its festivities on 25^th July, in honour of the Dormition of St Anna. The village holds historical significance, particularly with respect to the Turkish occupation, when it was a domain of the Kourmoulis family—a lineage of crypto-Christians.

In accordance with tradition, Kouses maintained a Secret School, where a Mr Spagos served as the teacher. The name of the District of Spagouliana was derived from the teacher’s name.
