Gorgolaini Monastery
ABOUT
The Holy Monastery of Agios Georgios Gorgoleimonos takes the visitor back into the past
It is very close to Kato Asites and certainly worth visiting.
The small religious community persist in not using microphones and electric lighting in the church, so the services, ceremonies and vespers here preserve the aura of the past.
There is an old wooden iconostasis, a work of ecclesiastical woodcarving craftsmanship from the 19th century. The old cells have been remodelled to meet the need for a children's camp run under the auspices of the Holy Archdiocese of Crete in the 1960s.
In 1966, the villagers were given almost all of the land owned the monastery, so only a few small pieces actually belong to the monastery today.
