Church of Agios Ioannis Episkopi

Churches

ABOUT

In the charming alleyways of Episkopi village, nestled within the Municipality of Hersonissos, one stumbles upon Agios Ioannis.

It is a small, single-aisled vaulted Byzantine church dating back to the Venetian period.

The church is dedicated to the Beheading of St John the Baptist (Timios Prodromos) and adorned with 14th-century frescoes.

The church's floor features tombs covered with rectangular stone slabs. An intriguing architectural element on the outer side of the north wall is an arch covering what appears to be a significant tomb. This was constructed after the church, suggesting that the tomb may belong to a renovator or someone closely associated with the church's restoration.
