Ancient Rizinia Cemetery

Histor. & Archaeological sites

ABOUT

As per information from the Municipality of Heraklion, the cemetery of ancient Rizinia is situated 2 kilometres past Ano Asites. Excavations initiated in 1969 by the Italian School of Archaeology revealed a vast necropolis that remained in use from the conclusion of the Minoan era (3000 BC-1100 BC) up to the 6th century AD.

In particular, 680 tombs have been excavated, yielding significant discoveries such as tombstones, vases, urns, and more. These findings are currently on display at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.

On the outskirts of the graveyard, by the roadside, stand two well-preserved arched structures from the Roman era, known as the ‘Siderospilies’. Legend has it that these are regal burial chambers, and nearby lies a third one, supposedly laden with gold, still undiscovered.
