Three schoolkids behind a major archaeological discovery!

Just 10 km south of Rethymno, in the village of Armenoi, lies one of the most striking necropolises of Minoan Crete. The site was discovered in 1969, thanks to... three kids and some clay pots brought to light by wild animals.

Archaeologist Giannis Tzedakis, who led the excavations, uncovered 232 tombs and a Minoan settlement complete with pottery and larnax workshops. The discovery of Linear B inscriptions and DNA identification of the deceased has offered valuable insights into the social structures of the time.

The site remains an active research area, with hopes of expanding excavations into the nearby town — if the surrounding private land can be acquired. Today, visitors can admire the unique tomb architecture and impressive finds that tell the story of a life dedicated to archaeological discovery.

Hit play and travel back to 1300 BC Crete, through the voice of the man who brought this piece of history to light.
