Adventure & Action

The successful programme of hiking routes continues in the Municipality of Platanias, along trails that have been developed, signposted and maintained by the municipality in areas of historical, cultural and environmental interest.

As part of this initiative, the Municipality of Platanias is organising a hike in Kolymbari on Saturday, 27 June 2026, at 18:30, in cooperation with the Kolymbari Women's Association, the Kolymbari Cultural Association and the Kolymbari Local Community Council.

The meeting and starting point will be the “Diktynna” Guesthouse of the Municipality of Platanias and the hall of the Kolymbari Women's Association.

The route includes a visit to the four shelters–pillboxes that were built during the German Occupation by local residents through forced labour and are located near the beginning of the trail. Participants will then follow a section of the path, including a pilgrimage visit to the Holy Monastery of Gonia and a stop at the Orthodox Academy of Crete, before returning to the starting point.

The total distance of the route is approximately 2 kilometres.

The difficulty level is low, although special attention is required at around 50 scattered steps located along sections of uneven terrain.

Participants are advised to bring water, suitable footwear and light clothing.

The hike will be accompanied by Polychronis Simandirakis, organiser of the hiking routes programme and Deputy Mayor for Culture of the Municipality of Platanias, while medical coverage will be provided by the Kissamos Branch of the Hellenic Red Cross.

The Municipality of Platanias’ hiking activities will conclude with this route for the summer season and will resume in September with new hikes to locations of historical significance and areas of exceptional natural beauty throughout the municipality.
