The opening will take place on Tuesday, 10 June 2025 at 19:30 in the impressive space of the Museum of Holy Icons and Relics of the Archdiocese of Crete. The exhibition will run until 10 August 2025.
The Holy Archdiocese of Crete and the Museum present a major exhibition by internationally renowned iconographer, painter, and professor George Kordis, titled Color as Light. Tradition and Creativity.
George Kordis is a painter, illustrator, author, and academic, whose work is dedicated to exploring Greek visual heritage—especially Byzantine painting. With deep respect for tradition, he crafts a personal artistic language where form, line, and light are joined with spirituality.
Although rooted in the Byzantine tradition, his technique incorporates elements of modernism and contemporary art, creating a unique artistic expression. As art historian Justin Wilson notes, “Kordis uses form to rediscover the ever-present potential for innovation within an ancient visual canon.”
Curator Keri Wiederspahn adds:
“Kordis’ icons do not merely replicate. They open a door into a living relationship… a moment of awe, pointing toward the light that resides beyond the visible.”
Visitors to this exhibition won’t just see icons—they’ll encounter moments of light. These works act as windows into another reality—quieter, deeper. Through his forms and colours, George Kordis invites us to pause. To look more deeply. To remember.
Here, tradition isn’t presented as distant or old, but alive and speaking—in a direct, human voice. The exhibition Color as Light invites visitors into a sensory and spiritual experience, where iconography is not static but a dialogue between past and present, between tradition and creative renewal.
