Anogeia in Crete has been included among 25 of the most beautiful and authentic villages in Greece, according to the Travel Greece Special feature by The Sunday Times.
The article highlights the mountainous nature of Anogeia, nestled on Mount Psiloritis, its strong cultural and musical traditions, and its historical significance during World War II, referencing the village’s destruction in 1944 and its role in the abduction of General Kreipe. At the same time, it presents modern-day Anogeia as a vibrant hub of culture and authentic Cretan hospitality.
It also mentions important nearby destinations such as Zominthos, Ancient Eleutherna, and the Ideon Cave.
This international recognition further strengthens Anogeia’s reputation as a destination rich in culture, history, and unique experiences, complementing its participation in the UNWTO’s Best Tourism Villages initiative in 2024.
As the article states:
“Known as the ‘terrace of Crete’ due to its high altitude on the slopes of the mighty Mount Psiloritis (the island’s highest mountain at 2,455m), Anogia is 23 winding miles from Heraklion. The village is famous for its musicians, and its Second World War resistance fighters. The Germans razed it to the ground in August 1944 in reprisal for the locals helping the British SOE officer Patrick Leigh Fermor kidnap the Nazi General Kreipe. Rebuilt after the war, it’s a delight, where everyone meets under the mulberry trees in the flower-filled square. Stay just outside Anogia at the Delina Mountain Resort, which has a spa and a flock of sheep and goats; and make unforgettable outings to the Minoan palace of Zominthos, ancient Eleutherna and the Ideon Cave, the birthplace of Zeus.”
