The beloved Shepherd and Cheese Festival returns to Zoniana for its 12th edition, celebrating the deep-rooted traditions of local cheesemaking and livestock farming.

Every year, this unique event draws thousands of visitors and shines a light on the rich cultural heritage tied to the life of the shepherd, the art of cheese production, and the everyday rhythm of pastoral life in Crete.

This year’s festivities include:

  • The presentation and slicing of the world’s largest kefalotyri cheese

  • A journey through local flavours, with live cooking by the women of the village

  • Live music from talented local artists of Zoniana

Performances by:

  • The T’Aori Dance Group

  • The Ntelikani Association

  • The Thanasis Mavrokostas Ensemble

There will also be a book presentation by Zoniana’s own folklorist Manolis Parasyris (Manoloukos).

This is a celebration rooted in taste and tradition.

As one of the most vibrant livestock-farming communities in Greece, Zoniana proudly honours the dedication and care of those who continue to produce high-quality, artisanal products. The festival is also a chance to reconnect with nature, heritage, and the authenticity of the Cretan land.

If you’re in search of real experiences, traditional flavours, and a genuine connection with Cretan culture, don’t miss the date: August 10 in Zoniana.
