With great pride and joy, the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum announces the successful completion of the project "Nikos Kazantzakis Correspondence – Digital Collection," implemented under the local LEADER programme of Development Agency of Heraklion. The project involves the digital exhibition of 1,000 letters written by Nikos Kazantzakis, now freely accessible via the Museum’s website at letters.kazantzaki.gr.

This ambitious initiative includes the digitisation, transcription, translation, and documentation of 1,000 letters written by Kazantzakis. The project was coordinated by the Museum itself and realised within less than ten months, with the collaboration of a large scientific team.

letters.kazantzaki.gr is a cutting-edge digital research project that highlights the vital role of personal correspondence in studying the life and work of Nikos Kazantzakis. It offers a fully documented digital presentation of the letters, interconnected references, and advanced search capabilities, all within a user-friendly and academically rigorous environment.

The platform also features a powerful search tool that allows users to locate words, phrases, and themes throughout the letters, both in Greek and English.

The Correspondence Archive, one of the Museum’s largest collections, was originally compiled by Giorgos Anemoyannis, the Museum’s founder, with contributions from dozens of private donors. It now contains over 7,000 documents: letters, postcards, telegrams—a priceless archival resource and an invaluable source of biographical and literary information, offering unique insight into Kazantzakis the man.

While letters.kazantzaki.gr represents a major phase of the project, it is not its final chapter. The goal is to create a dynamic, open-access platform that supports academic research and continues to expand, incorporating not only more of Kazantzakis' letters but also the correspondence of his peers.

By embracing open-archive policies, the Kazantzakis Museum aspires to become not only the leading spiritual hub for the study of his life and work, but also a central digital hub for Kazantzakis scholarship, offering valuable resources to researchers and admirers of the great writer.
