The Church of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia in Skepasti
ABOUT
The Intriguing Tale of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia Church in Skepasti, Rethymno
The two aisles of the church were constructed in the 16th century.
Despite their identical appearance, both with entrances situated in the north aisle, inscriptions inside the church indicate that they were constructed a few years apart.
According to the inscription on the north aisle, the renovation of the Church of St Nicholas took place in 1586 under the sponsorship of the hieromonk Nikodimos. The south aisle inscription reveals that the church dedicated to the Virgin Mary was constructed in 1592, also funded by hieromonk Nikodimos. This endeavour followed the return of his wife, who had been held captive for 28 years, possibly abducted by pirates.
