Ano Symi: green settlement with stunning views

The last settlement of the Municipality of Ierapetra towards the Municipality of Viannos, built in a lush landscape with spectacular views. The strong presence of greenery has established this area as a resort for the surrounding settlements, but also for foreigners.

One can see the Byzantine church of Agios Georgios, in the southern part of the settlement and admire the magnificent frescoes by the hagiographer Manuel Fokas, dating back to the mid-15th century, the time of the Alosea of Constantinople, as well as the three-aisled church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, built in 1841. Nearby you will also find the archaeological site and the Sanctuary of Hermes and Aphrodite, in the north of the settlement, accessible from Kato Symi.

The whole area is full of water springs that gush from the slopes of Dikti and a variety of trees, which in autumn change color giving the area a colorful tone, reminiscent of places more of northern Greece.
