The Municipal Art Gallery of Heraklion hosts, at the Basilica of Saint Mark, the solo exhibition of Giouli Garofalaki titled “Silent Weight”, featuring paintings, sculptures and photographs from 2000 to the present day.

Giouli Garofalaki photographs and paints the weight that surrounds us and often goes unnoticed. How can weight be captured through painting? How does weight become a work of art that stimulates thought and sparks the imagination? By photographing a rock from a close distance, the artist invites us to view the earth from above, as if in an aerial image. The cracks of the rock resemble rivers, the hollows suggest ravines, and the protrusions evoke mountains. A seemingly indifferent detail, one that often escapes attention, contains an entire world.

Through her persistent exploration of the concept of weight, using stone material and painting media, Garofalaki offers viewers the chance to imagine new landscapes, places they can travel to in their mind.
