A new cultural institution is taking root in Rethymno. The “Sculpture Days”, a thematic festival dedicated to art and creativity, is being introduced this year as a dynamic addition to the cultural calendar of the Municipality of Rethymno, inviting art lovers to discover the secrets of one of the most important visual arts that has flourished in Greece since antiquity.
More specifically, the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Rethymno, in collaboration with the Marble Sculpture Workshop of the Athens School of Fine Arts, is organizing the “Sculpture Days” from May 8 to May 20, 2026.
The event will be hosted at the Fine Arts School Station in Pevkakia and, as stated by the Deputy Mayor of Culture of the Municipality of Rethymno, Mr. Manos Tsakonas, “this is a new celebration that aims to strengthen the Department of Culture’s vision of establishing small festivals and celebrations embracing all forms of art, while also reinforcing the cooperation between our Municipality and the Athens School of Fine Arts, whose branch we are fortunate to host in the beautiful area of Pevkakia. Our goal is for the ‘Sculpture Days’ to become an annual institution, and I would especially like to thank the Rector of the School, Ms. Erato Chatzisavva, for the collaboration.”
CREATING ARTWORKS THAT WILL DECORATE THE CITY AND ITS VILLAGES
At the School Station in Pevkakia, ten students will participate under the guidance of the workshop supervisor and sculptor Mr. Dimitris Christogiannis. As part of the festival, they will create ten sculptures inspired by the theme “Idaean Man”.
Participating students are: Marianna Kosmidi, Konstantina Oikonomopoulou, Antigoni Xirogianni, Manolis Fotinos, Myrto Kapnisti, Georgia Giannopoulou, Roky Drozd, Iasonas Koutsouris, Dimitris Kotsaftis, and Elena Konstantopoulou.
The workshop will be open to the public daily from 11:00–14:00 and 18:00–20:00, and will also welcome school visits.
The sculptures, as original works of art, will remain in the Municipality to decorate public outdoor spaces across the city and surrounding villages.
The final presentation of the artworks by the students and workshop supervisor Dimitris Christogiannis will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 20, 2026, featuring speeches, guided tours, and a musical program in the outdoor area of the School.
