By joint decision of the Mayor of Viannos, Mr. Pavlos Baritakis, and the Mayor of Ierapetra, Mr. Emmanouil Fragoulis, the Tertsa–Myrtos coastal road will remain closed until further notice.

The mayors reached this decision based on:

  • The ongoing rockfalls along the Myrtos–Tertsa coastal road, which have made the route highly dangerous for drivers.

  • The latest major rockfall on 10 February 2026, which destroyed part of the road surface at the impact site.

As a result, the entire stretch between Myrtos and Tertsa is now closed, and traffic is suspended in both directions for safety reasons, in order to prevent accidents due to the high risk of further landslides.

The joint decision clearly states that the municipalities bear no responsibility for any potential accidents, damage to vehicles, or injuries that may occur. Anyone choosing to use the road does so entirely at their own risk.

This road is now permanently closed,” noted Mr. Baritakis, “because there is absolutely no safety for drivers along this route. From now on, all traffic should use the provincial road network connecting Viannos and Ierapetra.
