One of the most distinctive folk customs of Cretan tradition will mark the start of the 2026 summer events programme of the Cultural Association of Kounavoi, inviting visitors of all ages to take part in the revival of Klidonas on 23 and 24 June.

This event attracts an increasing number of visitors every year, offering them the opportunity to experience first-hand the customs associated with Agios Ioannis Klidonas through a particularly atmospheric ritual.

The celebrations will begin on Tuesday, 23 June, with the traditional procession of the “silent water”. Young women carrying torches and clay amphorae will transport the water according to custom, while the characteristic goat-legged figures and the bonfires of Agios Ioannis will also be part of the festivities.

The events will continue on Wednesday, 24 June, with the opening of the Klidonas, accompanied by a theatrical performance prepared by members and friends of the Association.

The evening will conclude with a music and dance performance by the students of the Kounavoi dance groups, under the guidance of dance instructor Eleftheria Adamaki.

The Cultural Association of Kounavoi extends an open invitation to everyone to take part in the two-day celebrations and experience an authentic revival of a tradition that remains alive and continues to be passed down from generation to generation.

“May we gather together in good spirit,” is the message of the organisers, who once again invite everyone to celebrate tradition, culture and collective memory.
