On Sunday, 22 March 2026, the Mountaineering Club of Agios Nikolaos is organising a hike for its financially up-to-date members as well as for those interested in registering, along the eastern coast of Crete, from Xerokampos to the gorge of Chochlakies.

“Our transfer to the area will take place by bus. The hike will begin from Katsounaki Beach in Xerokampos. We will follow the marked trail above the sea all the way to Kato Zakros, home to the important Minoan Palace (first part of the route: 3 hours of walking).

We then continue along the coastline, visit the Pelekita Cave, and reach the secluded Karoumes Beach. From there, we ascend through the small gorge of Chochlakies, finishing at the village of the same name (second part of the route: 4 hours of walking).

The route does not involve significant elevation gain; however, it covers quite a few kilometres and several hours of walking. Participants may choose to complete only the first part and remain for a few hours in Kato Zakros. Those undertaking the full route must carry sufficient food and water. The itinerary may also be adjusted depending on weather conditions,” the announcement notes.
