The Heraklion Mountaineering Club is organising an excursion to Vrysi Gorge on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
In its invitation, the club describes the route:
“Our starting point will be the village of Lakki, Chania (450m). The trail we will follow passes through lush greenery and beneath Cretan cypress trees. A large section of it has been carved directly into the rock.
It is considered a remarkable human achievement, reflecting the determination of the local people to secure access to water in order to supply their villages and irrigate their crops.
Initially, we will move along one side of the gorge until we reach its springs (790m). The name of the spring (Vrysi) also gave the gorge its name.
We will then cross to the opposite side and, following the carved pathway, arrive at the village of Zourva (570m).
The route is not recommended for hikers with acrophobia, as there are exposed sections along the trail.”
