Gorges, caves, unmapped and rugged trails—Crete is full of raw, thrilling experiences for anyone looking to connect with nature and push their limits.

But if you’re not going with a guide or in an organised group, be aware: these adventures come with risks. Being prepared is not optional—it’s essential if you want to return from your outing safe and sound.

You’ll need the right gear: a helmet where required, comfortable shoes, a backpack with water and snacks, a hat, and anything else that might come in handy in case you find yourself in the middle of nowhere with nothing.

Sadly, there have been many visitors who set out for a scenic hike and ended up waiting for rescue from the Fire Brigade and local authorities. Accidents are not rare.

And don’t underestimate the weather. In strong southern winds, heatwaves, or heavy rain, it’s wise to reschedule your plans. Always check the weather forecast, and remember that certain spots—like Samaria Gorge—close down when conditions become dangerous (Check here).
