Fourfouras, Rethymno – At the foothills of Psiloritis, in one of the most authentic corners of Crete, a new mural comes to remind us that memory and art can keep the soul of a place alive. The work, titled “Grandfather Manolis, Back Home, in Bloom”, now adorns the wall of a house in Fourfouras, transforming a personal loss into a shared celebration of remembrance.

The Return to the Roots
The mural was created to honour the figure of a grandfather who has passed away, yet whose family and village wished to “keep” him there, in his home. Depicting Grandfather Manolis with his donkey and his grandchildren carrying flowers, the work symbolises his return to his familiar surroundings, bringing with him colour, life and hope.

An Artistic Bridge that Brought the Village Together
The mural was painted by Myrto Kapnisti, a final-year student at the Athens School of Fine Arts. The creative process unfolded into a unique social experience. As Myrto painted, elderly villagers would stop, deeply moved, watching a familiar figure come back to life.

They shared long-forgotten stories about Grandfather Manolis, recalled moments from the village’s past, and turned the act of creation into a living dialogue between generations. Art became the reason for Fourfouras to grow more beautiful, while strengthening the sense of community in a place that may feel “forgotten”, yet remains rich in authenticity.

An Invitation to Passersby
The residents of Fourfouras invite visitors and passersby from Amari to pause in the village and experience the mural up close. It stands as a gentle reminder that life and creativity continue in mountainous Crete, and that those we have loved remain present, as long as we remember and honour them through art.
