Psiloritis hosted Pierra Creta once again in 2026, the international ski mountaineering race that has grown into one of the most distinctive sporting events in Greece.
The 7th edition of Pierra Creta brought together more than 270 athletes from 15 countries, who gathered on Saturday, 6 March 2026, at Lakkos of Mygerou for an authentic experience on the snow-covered peaks of Psiloritis.
The southernmost ski mountaineering race in Europe was organised by the NGO “Mavro Provato”, under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, with the support of the Greek National Tourism Organisation (EOT) and the Region of Crete.
From its first event in 2014 until today, Pierra Creta has evolved from a small gathering of ski mountaineering enthusiasts into an international institution attracting athletes from across Europe.
“Pierra Creta is not just a race. It is an event that connects ski mountaineering with the culture of wild nature, hospitality and the authenticity of the Cretan hinterland. For 12 years it has been sustained by the energy and passion of its people. This year, despite the demanding conditions, everyone contributed so that an event full of cooperation and joy could take place,” explains Nikiforos Steiakakis, co-founder of the NGO “Mavro Provato.”
The latest edition took place in one of the most wintery landscapes of Crete, with participants facing challenging conditions and demanding routes.
From sunrise at an altitude of 2,500 metres and the alpine scenery of the mountain peaks, to the finish line overlooking the sea, the athletes experienced a powerful journey that combines sport with adventure.
Equally important was the contribution of the event supporters. ANEK Lines offered discounts on passenger and vehicle transport on the Piraeus – Crete – Piraeus route, while Aegean Airlines provided free transportation of ski equipment.
It is also worth noting the “Save the Snow Leopard” initiative by Dynafit. The 271 participants recorded a total of 302,350 metres of elevation gain, raising €3,023.50 for actions protecting the endangered mountain species.
The idea, as the organisers themselves say, was born spontaneously, “with beers in hand,” by a group of people who live in Crete and love ski mountaineering.
The name Pierra Creta emerged as a wordplay inspired by the legendary Alpine race Pierra Menta, as a tribute to an event that served as a source of inspiration.
For yet another year, Pierra Creta confirmed that Crete is not only a summer destination, but also a place capable of hosting international sporting events, revealing a different, winter side of the island.
Pierra Creta was born from a group of people who, every two years, share their love for the mountain in the most authentic way.
