With the goal of highlighting areas of exceptional natural beauty, the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos is organising the “1st Adventure Fest” on 25–26 April 2026. This two-day sporting event aspires to become a landmark occasion — an opportunity for both locals and visitors to connect with nature and explore remarkable locations such as the climbing field of Peza in Kalo Chorio, Fraro in Neapoli, and the islet of Kolokytha opposite Spinalonga.
The programme of activities was presented during a press conference held at the old town hall, attended by representatives of the associations supporting the event.
Deputy Mayor of Sports Stergios Atsalakis, referring to the organisation, explained that the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos, in collaboration with DAEAN and with the support of sports clubs — Neapoli Cycling Club “Dreros”, Mountaineering Athletic Club “Talos”, and Hellenic Mountaineering Club of Lasithi (EOS) — is inviting residents and visitors to engage with nature through a series of targeted activities. As he noted, these initiatives aim to highlight the distinct characteristics of the wider area, while the participation of additional clubs could help establish the event as a lasting institution in the years to come.
President of DAEAN Giorgos Astroulakis pointed out that the municipality, through this event, seeks to promote all inland areas. He also thanked the sports clubs for their support, noting:
“We are lighting the spark so that more ideas may follow in the future and people embrace these events.”
Kostas Vlastos, President of the Hellenic Mountaineering Club of Lasithi, welcomed the initiative, describing Merabello as a place blessed by nature, with an extensive coastline, crystal-clear beaches, impressive mountains, gorges and forests that together form a landscape of unique beauty.
“We gladly accepted the municipality’s proposal, as it offers yet another opportunity to showcase the natural beauty of this place and to inspire those who wish to step outdoors and take part in one of the three sports planned for the weekend.”
On Sunday 26 April, the Hellenic Mountaineering Club of Lasithi is organising a running race on Kolokytha island.
The race will start at 10:00 a.m., with the starting point at Mylos (Elounda Canal). The route will be circular around Kolokytha island, covering approximately 7.5 km.
A 1 km race is also planned for younger participants.
Kostas Vlastos expressed his wish for the event to achieve the expected success, gain continuity and become established in the public’s mind as a high-level organisation.
Dimitris Koulougousidis, President of the Mountaineering Athletic Club “Talos”, referred to the climbing competitions that will take place at Peza in Kalo Chorio (a certified climbing field). The competitions will run from 10:00 to 14:00, and equipment will be provided to participants by the club.
Finally, Nikos Faitos, President of the Cycling Club “Dreros”, noted that the cycling routes in the Fraro area (25/4) are designed for children aged 6–7 years (short route) and 12–17 years (longer route).
At the end of these races, there will be an open route, where anyone can freely participate with their own bicycle, while helmet use is mandatory.
It should be noted that on Sunday 26 April at midday, awards will be presented to the winners in the central square of Neapoli, in an event that is open to all participants.
