ABOUT
The Skinakas Observatory is equipped with three telescopes, each with a mirror diameter of 1.3 metres, 0.6 metres, and 0.3 metres.
The operation of the Skinakas Observatory is supported by the staff from the Department of Physics of the University of Crete and the Institute of Astrophysics of FORTH.
The Skinakas Observatory is situated on Mt Ida (Psiloritis), a central mountain in Crete, at an elevation of 1,750 metres. It is approximately 25 kilometres away from the city of Heraklion in a straight line, while the road distance is around 50 kilometres. Along the way, about 20 kilometres before reaching Skinakas, one encounters the charming town of Anogia, which holds significance in the modern history of Crete. Towards the northwest of the Observatory, at a distance of approximately 6 kilometres, lies the renowned Ideon Andron, the legendary cave where Zeus was raised, according to legend.
