Kalathenes: The Venetians Are Still Here...
ABOUT
“Wait, what year is it?” one wonders upon setting foot in Kalathenes, in the municipality of Kissamos.
Visitors stroll among Venetian mansions, churches, and traditional homes.
One of the remaining mansions stands out for its impressive arched entrance, though its coat of arms has been destroyed.
Perhaps the most well-known building is the Villa Retonda or Rotonda. Construction began in the early 17th century, but when the Ottomans conquered Crete, the structure was still incomplete—only the ground floor had been finished.
The house includes an inner courtyard and was designed following the style of the Palladian villas.
In the village you’ll also find painted churches:
those of the Virgin Mary, the Holy Trinity, Saint John, and Saint George.
