Agios Sozon (St Sozon)
ABOUT
A remote spot on the map well worthy of a visit
The ‘Akron of Zeus’ (Zeus’s end) is the name it goes by on the maps of the Venetian period. The cape of Agios Sozon( also known today as Stavros) northwest of Achlada, was an important landmark in ancient times.
On the day of the commemoration of St Sozon, pilgrims from Rodia, Achlada, Fodele and various other regions of Crete visit the church. In the past, the pilgrimage used to be much more of a formal occasion than it is today.
A lighthouse
Next to the chapel there is an old lighthouse built in 1921 and functioning until 1949. The height of the lighthouse from the surface of the sea is 23 metres and its beam is 6 miles long. T
