Agios Ioannis Farangitis (St John of the Gorge) Monastery
ABOUT
The ruined Monastery of Agios Ioannis Farangitis is situated inside the Almyros Gorge.
It had three churches and remained intact for three centuries between 1350 and 1669 when it was destroyed following the Turkish occupation of Crete. Today, only the ruins of the old monastic complex remain.
The main church has two aisles and is dedicated to Agios Antonios (St Anthony) and Agia Paraskevi (St Paraskevi) and boasts frescoes of great significance. Next to the Major Temple is the small church of Agia Marina (St Marina), which was the burial chamber of the monastery. One of the seven names of the gorge is the Gorge of the Three Churches.
