Explor.gr: Unveil the Natural Beauty of Sarakina Gorge
ABOUT
Prepare for a remarkable adventure as explor.gr invites you to embark on a unique excursion to the magnificent Sarakina Gorge. Situated in south-eastern Crete, just 17 kilometres from Ierapetra, this breath-taking gorge awaits near the charming village of Mythi. While not the longest, Sarakina Gorge is hailed as the easiest and most stunning by visitors who have traversed its enchanting path.
According to an ancient legend, the colossal giant Sarandapichos once paused to quench his thirst from the waters of the river Mirtos (or Myrtos). As he bent down to drink, his majestic long beard inadvertently sliced through the mountain, creating a spectacular cleft in the land that we now know as Sarakina Gorge.
The gorge is approximately 1.5 kilometres long and its width ranges from 3 to 10 metres, although there are a few spots where it widens further. The walls of the gorge are about 150 metres high. The river Kryopotamos runs through the gorge consistently throughout the year, creating stunning waterfalls and lakes that are perfect for swimming during the summer. In certain areas where the terrain is rugged, there are steps carved into the rocks and also tree trunks serving as makeshift ladders.
