Department of Philology, University of Crete
The Department aims to nurture and advance the disciplines associated with Philology (Classical, Byzantine, and Modern Greek Literature, Linguistics, and Theatrology) through academic instruction and scholarly research.
Since its establishment in 1983, the Department of Philology has maintained a pioneering stance, particularly in its student-centred approach to curriculum flexibility, alongside a well-structured course of study. Moreover, it was the first in Greece to introduce a distinct Department of Theatrology-Musicology. Today, with the inclusion of Film Studies, the department offers a comprehensive approach to philological subjects, which is unique among Philological Departments in Greece.
