The Municipal Art Gallery of Chania and the Centre for Culture, Research and Documentation of the Bank of Greece present the exhibition “Routes in Art: Works from the Bank of Greece Collection.”
Exhibition dates: 24 May – 2 November 2025
This exceptional exhibition offers a rich visual portrait of Greek art through 99 selected works from the Bank of Greece Collection. The exhibition opens on Saturday, 24 May 2025 at 20:00, with an inaugural address by the Governor of the Bank of Greece, Yannis Stournaras.
Curated by Haris Kanellopoulou, art historian and scientific head of the Bank’s art collection, the exhibition traces the evolution of modern Greek art through works that act as visual testaments to different places and periods.

The collection spans from 1870 to 2024, bringing together pieces by emblematic historical figures, renowned modern artists, and emerging contemporary voices. It showcases the diversity and richness of one of Greece’s most respected art collections, offering viewers a multifaceted experience of Greek visual expression.
The exhibition is arranged into three thematic “routes”, spread across the three floors of the Municipal Gallery:
-
Route One travels from the late 19th century and the Munich School to seascapes and related themes of the early to mid-20th century.
-
Route Two begins in the 1920s, highlighting the bold representations of Greek modernism, and continues through the avant-garde explorations of artists active in the 1960s and 1970s.
-
Route Three moves from 1970s figuration to contemporary abstraction, capturing the changing forms of landscape and the human figure into the present decade.

Among the featured artists are Nikolaos Gyzis, Nikiforos Lytras, Konstantinos Volanakis, Ioannis Altamouras, Thaleia Flora-Karavia, Sofia Laskaridou, Periklis Byzantios, Konstantinos Parthenis, Spyros Papaloukas, Konstantinos Maleas, A.
