Everything is set for the Klidonas celebration in Choudetsi, taking place on Monday, June 23, 2025, at Hatzine Square.
The evening will feature Cretan music by Kostas Kakoudakis and Michalis Petsakis, bringing people together in celebration.
The traditional Klidonas rituals will be presented by the Erotokrites Cultural Education Workshop.
On the afternoon of Sunday, June 22, locals will collect the “silent water” and burn their May Day wreaths in preparation for the festivities.
Admission is free!
Klidonas is an ancient ritual held on the feast day of St. John the Baptist.
Tradition says that young women participating in the ceremony will discover the name of their future spouse.
In every village and neighborhood, people light fires and burn the May wreaths—those made from flowers on May Day.
Custom has it that you must jump over the fire three times—always carefully!
