Adventure & Action

On Sunday, May 4, the Mountaineering Club of Agios Nikolaos will hike through the whetstone quarry area in Epano Elounda.

Route description:
“We’ll begin just before reaching the settlement of Epano Elounda, heading southwest, hiking up through the Damianos streams. We’ll continue below the Karfi peak until we reach a small plateau where a small settlement once existed. From there, we’ll climb up to Trapeza peak to enjoy the panoramic views of the region. On our descent, we’ll follow a dirt road to the Leskes area, where there are numerous preserved whetstone quarrying sites. These stones were well-known both in modern times and, quite possibly, in antiquity for their commercial significance.
As we descend towards our starting point, we’ll also come across preserved dry-stone constructions.

The trail is circular, easy, and combines natural beauty, geological interest, and cultural heritage.

Hiking boots and poles are essential, as well as a windbreaker, depending on the weather conditions.
