Renovated and upgraded, the monastic complex of Panagia Gouverniotissa reopens from Tuesday, April 21, 2026, perched on the top of a small hill just before the village of Potamies, in the Municipality of Hersonissos.
A stunning setting immersed in greenery and filled with the aromas of sage, oregano and wild aromatic herbs that drift through the air.
A monument with a long history comes back to life, thanks to the initiative of a group of volunteers who founded the Cultural and Development Organization of Potamies “I Gouverniotissa” for exactly this purpose.
Beyond the renovated church of Panagia Gouverniotissa, richly adorned with remarkable and rare 14th-century frescoes, visitors can explore:
- The Exhibition of Ecclesiastical Relics, featuring the carved wooden icon screens of Gouverniotissa, holy gospels, the Monastery Codex, handmade priestly vestments, and sacred vessels (chalices, lances, crosses). In a neighbouring room, replicas of the monastery’s portable icons from the 16th century are displayed.
- Special display cases narrating the history of the Monastery, including its role in the Cretan Revolution (with period weaponry on display), its contribution to the establishment of schools, and documents confirming the financial support it provided to the council of elders of Heraklion.
- The exhibition titled “The history of Crete through the local press”, a rich collection of historical documents combined with a tribute to journalist Nikos Kazantzakis.
- Two historic artefacts from the Press Museum of ESIEPIN, namely the handwritten letter of Theodoros Kolokotronis and the handwritten resolution of the 3rd National Assembly in Troizina in 1827, inviting Ioannis Kapodistrias to come to Greece and assume governance of the country.
- The folklore corner, showcasing a valuable sample of traditional heritage. The exhibits take visitors on a journey back in time, from daily life in a Cretan home to the art of weaving on a traditional loom.
- A space hosting temporary exhibitions
- The botanical garden
- An ancient olive tree, a natural monument estimated to be over 500 years old
- Breathtaking views over Lagada
- And the chance to enjoy a coffee or refreshment at the on-site café
