What remains of a dowry when the institution itself has been abolished? How many women's stories still live on through embroidery, fabrics and family heirlooms?
The exhibition “What Was Left Unsaid Was Embroidered”, by photographer Mina Trikali and embroidery artist Nana Lambraki, explores the dowry as an unwritten history of women and a vessel of memory that continues to connect generations.
The project began with Mina Trikali's personal dowry chest and the items her mother had made for her dowry. In the exhibition, ten symbolic female figures are brought together with original embroidery, family objects and short phrases that read like inner monologues.
Her photographs are transferred by hand onto fabric, where they meet the embroidered interventions of Nana Lambraki, creating a dialogue between photography, thread and memory.
The exhibition also features audio testimonies, interviews, videos and archival material, bringing real women's voices and personal stories into the space.
The exhibition speaks not only of the dowry as a social institution, but above all of what is quietly passed down from one generation to the next: care, resilience, values, silences and lived experiences.
As photographer Mina Trikali puts it:
“The most precious dowry is not kept in chests. It is what we endured. What we held on to. What we passed down without ever putting it into words.”
Because some stories were never written in words.
They were embroidered.
