Excursion to the Eastern “Balconies” of Crete

Author Discover Crete

Adventure & Action

In the eastern “balconies” of the island — Anatoli, Estavromenos and Panagia Kalafatianí — we set out this week on a nature-focused hike with UNLIMITED, ABUNDANT AND UNOBSTRUCTED views, lush greenery, running water and striking rock formations.

Our final stop will be at the Cretan… Meteora, in Kalamavka, one of the most important and historic villages of Ierapetra, inhabited since 1100 BC. A point of particular interest is the cave-like chapel of Timios Stavros (built on the site — like many others — of a Minoan peak sanctuary), with small pine trees framing the landscape and giving it an almost eastern, exotic feel.

We will allow free time with the choice of:
a) the picturesque local tavernas and cafés
b) the impressive springs of the Kalamavkiano stream (part of them)

Hiking duration: 04:00 hours – Difficulty Level 1

Departure: 08:00, Sunday 08/03/2026, from the Saturday Farmers’ Market area (Agia Anna).

Our excursions take place in a non-urban environment, and appropriate equipment according to terrain and season is required.
