News

Kourtaliotiko Gorge is a slice of paradise on Earth — but in recent years, its charm has been at risk due to the growing number of visitors.

In 2025, specific regulations and an entrance fee were introduced to help protect this natural wonder.

Here’s what you need to know:

The hike in the Kourtaliotiko Gorge is recommended to be done exclusively on the central trail, which is approximately 2 km long. The route starts at an altitude of 192m (Ticket Booth 35.189400 – 24.463431) and ends at an altitude of 112m (Waterfalls 35.196208 – 24.466172). Visitors start from the southern part of the trail, climb to the small church of Saint Nicholas, and return to the starting point.

There is no access for wheeled vehicles inside the gorge. Only pedestrians are allowed.

The Kourtaliotis River crosses the gorge, flowing into Lake Preveli. The area is characterized by rich riparian vegetation, such as Theophrastus palms, clusters of oleanders, and carob trees. In May, certain sections of the trail may flood due to river waters, so it is recommended to wear appropriate shoes and clothing.

Visitor movement on the central trail is necessary not only for their safety but also to protect the sensitive ecosystems and species hosted in the area.

Visiting Period & Hours

The visiting period for the trail is from May 1st to October 31st, daily, with operating hours from 09:00 to 19:00. Visitors must have exited before 19:00.

Emergency Closure of the Gorge

Before starting your visit, please check for any announcements regarding the emergency closure of the trail. Visitor movement may be regulated or prohibited due to emergency circumstances. The decision to regulate the visitability is usually made at noon or in the afternoon of the previous day, but it may also occur on the same day in case of an emergency.
