A fascinating journey into the wild, unseen side of Crete, where nature retains its primordial power and people continue to live in deep connection with the mountains, awaits visitors to the photographic exhibition “Apokosmos – Beyond the World and Time. Sfakia Madhares, the Wild West of Crete”, by journalist and photographer Giorgos Patroudakis.

The exhibition opens on Friday, 16 October 2026, at 18:00, at the Church of Saint Peter of the Dominicans, inviting visitors on a unique journey through the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and one of Crete’s most distinctive, mysterious and lesser-known landscapes.

The exhibition is a post-festival event of the Crete Festival, organised by the Region of Crete, in collaboration with the Holy Archdiocese of Crete, the Parish of Agios Dimitrios Limenos, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion and the Municipality of Sfakia.

Through a photographic journey spanning three decades, Giorgos Patroudakis captures the imposing beauty of the Sfakia Madhares, with their bare peaks, deep chasms and arid valleys, alongside the people who continue to keep ancient traditions alive. Livestock farming, seasonal migrations, the everyday lives of the Madharites and traditional stone buildings tell the story of a world that seems to exist beyond time.

It is a world of priceless natural and cultural value, now standing at a critical crossroads. Traditional activities are being abandoned, historic buildings are crumbling, and centuries-old knowledge is at risk of disappearing.

“Apokosmos” is more than a photographic exhibition. It is an invitation to discover an extraordinary place, a testimony to its uniqueness and a call to protect and celebrate its natural and cultural heritage.

The Region of Crete and the co-organisers invite everyone to the exhibition opening on Friday, 16 October 2026, at 18:00, at the Church of Saint Peter of the Dominicans, for an unforgettable journey into Crete’s Wild West, where stone, nature and human memory come together to create a world beyond the world and time.
