On Sunday 26-04-2026, the Mountaineering Club of Agios Nikolaos is organising a hike in the Asterousia Mountains for its members, as well as for those who wish to register.
A bus will take us to Achentria (690m), where our walk begins, first along a trail and then on a rural road. We pass through the area of Steiromandra, and from there follow a section of the ancient stone path that once connected Achentria with Agios Nikitas.
Crossing Steno Poro (820m), we take in the striking rock formations. The route then continues downhill along an old stone trail, passing by Lake Kolymba or Tourkou Lakkos, home to the winter lake – the southernmost in Crete.
The path carries on along a stone-paved kalderimi towards the Kefalovrysi spring and the unique palm forest of Agios Antonios, all the while overlooking the deep blue of the southern Cretan Sea. The trail leads us to the seaside monastery of Agios Nikitas.
From there, following both trail and rural road, we pass through Maridaki. Finally, continuing along the path, we complete our hike in Tsoutsouras, by its beautiful beach.
