Vainia: The Miraculous Village
ABOUT
The village of Vainia presents visitors with a unique and captivating view.
As per records from the Municipality of Ierapetra, the village bore the name Yanintsi until 1932, possibly influenced by a notable Russian settler celebrated for his charitable endeavours. However, the name was thought to have Turkish roots. Subsequently, the villagers opted for a change, selecting ‘Vainia’ owing to its close proximity to a location renowned for its abundant churches.
Vainia boasts several churches, with the grandest festival held in honour of St Panteleimon on 27th July. The custom of blessing bread, symbolising the miracles linked to the church's renown, is a notable aspect of the tradition here.
Approximately one kilometre east of the village, near the Church of the Holy Cross (Timios Stavros), lie the fascinating ruins of a Venetian tower.
